@ arfen

I know what you mean. The game really starts to sink in towards the end. After having beat it, I can definitely say I will start to play it again soon. Once you "grasp" the controls and movesets pulling off well-timed combos is VERY gratifying. This game proves that controls are everything.

I'm replaying this game now. I take a long time to use motion controll well first time, but now i know i'm hsving a most fun time and combats are so fun when you know how to combat... do no combat sitting on the sofa, stand up to combat ;) standing up you can move better and do your best

Here is the reason this game is not selling well. The ad for the game was awful. That commercial focused more on the costumes than the game. If all I saw was the commercial I would have thought this was a kiddie game. They should have made a ad that focused on the game and its grittiness.

this didn't sell that well for two reasons:

-1- it's not a nintendo again, or doesn't have anything to do with mario.

-2- it's not a sports game.

The reason could more simple. The is a huge differences between a game published by Nintendo and the major of Third party games. You 've to think that Nintendo is probably the best game editor in the world, so, for third parties is hard to do games like that (of course, there are exceptions from Capcom, Ea or some publishers, but not much on the Wii). And, more important than this, is that the audience of the Wii are normally nintendo fans, so when 2 or 3 good games are on sale, maybe people prefer pay for a Nintendo game than a third party game. Is very difficult make games with nintendo as a competitor. This argument could be one on the reasons third parties sell just well.

@OmegaRugalv3: Why are we suppose to support third party games? I am just buy what I want to play, and the same goes for everybody... you can not blame wii audience if they dont like this kind of games...
I have RS and I like it, but that doesnot mean every wii owner have to do the same...

I think the main reasons why this hasn't sold is no/little marketing (and for what I've seen the ads are not that great) and no multiplayer. Still I think 500k is possible if they start advertising the game better.

the reason why this game fails is that the 1st red steel promised so much but didn't deliver!!! Now Ubi has 1.3 million gamers who got burned with the first game and is gun shy to pick up anything to do with the Red Steel franchise. Karma on Ubisoft for realeasing such subpar products early on the Wii's lifetime. They released such atrocious games like red steel, monster 4x4, blazing angels, GT pro, and a turd version of Far Cry. Ubi is so greedy and really wants to just make a buck off Wii owners. I might pick this game up when it hits $15 (even though the game is good) as I don't think Ubi deserves success on the Wii platform!!!

I think Ubi wrote the death sentence for this game when they made if motion plus exclusive, AND axed multiplayer. I think a main reason more people bought RS1 is the multi. Without it, or online, it sorely lacks in replay value. It's Madworld all over again, great game but terrible replay value and lack of content for its price. Once it drops to $20-30, sales will pick up, like they did for Madworld. That's when I'm planning on picking it up at least.

I don't know how to post links, but the development cost of Wii games is generally 1/3 to 1/4 the cost of developing an HD game on the PS3 or 360. Developing costs for those systems are generally between 20-40 million. For instance, God of War III costed Santa Monica Studios $44 million to develop. That includes shipping, salary, retailer profits, publisher profits and advertising costs. At $60 per copy sold, they needed to sell around 733k to break even. Red Steel 1 cost Ubisoft about 12.75 mil to develop and release. At full retail of $50, it only needed to sell around 240k to break even. (I did some digging to find these numbers and development costs for RS 1 were a little over the 5-10 mil range, but those numbers are still accurate for the majority of Wii games.)

Ubisoft is probably already over halfway to making a profit on this game with the current sales. It only takes 5-10 mil to release a game on the Wii so if this sells 200k at full price it should break even.

So far this game is doing worse than The Conduit. A bit, anyway. It could pick up eventually, but at its current rate it'd be a stretch to say this game will even make it to half a mil lifetime. 350,000-400,000 seems more realistic. For now, at least. Let's see how this game legs out for 10 weeks.

I wish piracy didn't over-rule the games industry. this is ridiculous. a lot of adult themed games perform badly because of piracy. but I think for any adult game to succeed they'll have to release a lot of online functions to elevate the success because I don't think you can play pirated games on-line. lets hope monster hunters performs better

Well game took me a solid 10 hours to beat which included doing the side missions. Overall I'm rather impressed with the title. Graphics were stunning in this game and one of the most polished I've seen from a 3rd party on the Wii.

Progression and missions could have used some more variation but still entertaining enough to not make it "feel like work". But really the best thing of this was the gameplay. Is the first Wii game I've played that I couldn't "cheat" to really get through the game. Waggle will not work in this game. You have to do the motions right or you will not last long.

So this game really gave me the feeling of being in the spot of the main character and doing a lot of the things he did. And man did it feel cool haha. Only problem is it hurt my shoulder haha, but that is because this is an old baseball injury and not the game's faults.

For those still on the fence of this title, I will say it works and it works well. There are some things in the game that could have been fixed or made better, but the core experience is a blast and you'll enjoy every minute of it. This is the Wii experience you dreamed when you first got the console so enjoy yourself.

The sales for the game reflect the marketing push behind the game which was poor at best. That's the same like many if not all 3rd party Wii games. The exceptions being Wii Dance, Mario & Sonic, and now Monster Hunter Tri.

No one should have expected huge up front sales for this game. That doesn't mean it won't continue to sell over time. Many Wii games do. However if this doesn't sell well it is because of Ubisoft. That was my fear from the very start. You don't push your own game don't expect it to sell. Gaming ads at midnight for a game that easily could be marketed to young teens due to content didn't make any sense. There were no daytime tv ads from what I could tell and Wii games need them unless they already have an established brand.

Third parties know this but refuse to do it on the Wii.

I'm really enjoying this. Finally had some time with spring break to get deeper into this and it is a very solid experience. Controls are what I wanted out of the first one haha. Very solid and smooth transitions all around. Still not 1:1 but good enough for me right now.

Or pretty much enough where it's close enough to make me feel like I'm doing it but not too close where I let down the character on screen who is an expert and me who knows nothing about how to handle a sword haha.

IF production cost of PS3 did go down I expect the same for the Wii since it's using basically last generation techniques. The average Wii game cost anywhere between $2-$5M to develop and top tier games like Zelda and Galaxy (though I think galaxy is avg now since it's reusing the same engine) cost around $8M-$10M. The average cost of a PS3 game at the moment is $18-$28M. With GoW III costing 44M and Killzone II at over $50M. Therefore the number of copies a game needs to sell in order to produce a profit is significantly lower on the Wii than PS3. I heard Reggie say 150-200K is the thereshold of a profit for a Wii title. That's why we see Sega, Ubi, EA still pumping outsequels/ titles like The Conduit II, NMH:DS, and MoH series on the Wii
Message | Report
drakesfortune posted 01/04/2010, 03:39
@oni - PS3 USUALLY costs 3 to 4 times as much to develop for. I'm sure that RS2 cost a lot less than GoW, but at the same time, Ubi poured a lot more cash into RS2 than the average. Clearly they spent some dough on this game, and I'd speculate that it cost no less than half what the normal PS3 game costs now. Plus it's not as expensive as it used be to develop for PS3 since there is a large code base, and most engines are built, which reduces the costs further.
Message | Report
oni-link posted 01/04/2010, 03:20
PS3 also cost 4-5x more to develop.
Part of the reason for the lower sales than the original is that Ubi really screwed the consumer on the first game. Many now will tlake a wait and see attitude on this game. You reap what you sow I guess. Speaking of bombs Dante's Inferno isn't doing too hot on the PS3 despite the massive advertising campaign and being a very well made (visually and technically) game

You can NOT compare any Call of Duty game's sales to this game. Call of Duty is the BIGGEST 3rd party name in video games right now. If it says Call of Duty on the box, it'll have a long burn, no matter the platform. Red Steel is in NO WAY in that category with CoD. No way. I hope they get their 500k, and they probably will get there, but this game needed to launch at the same time as motion plus, and they blew it big time by missing that window.

@Buzzi

That's not true. First of all, 1,20 million people have the first game, so it IS a popular franchise after all... It's not an unknown game, that's for sure. Second, I'm a Nintendo fan and yes, everybody is right, I buy Nintendo games without hesitating, and when I'm gonna buy a third party game, I actually think a lot about it, since Nintendo games >>> third party games... That's a true, if you grew up with Nintendo you know it... So, it's true, in the end, it's really hard for 3rd party games to sell on Wii, either they are advertised or not... Even companies like Capcom and Square Enix are finding it difficult (well, SE just released crappy games, but Capcom is a HELL of a company!)

But it doesn't really matter, since high-profile Wii games aren't as front-heavy as most high-profile releases on the PS360. It's almost impossible to tell how well this game will sell based on the first week. (Which wasn't even a full one in others.)

The fact is that the Wii userbase is not like the HD consoles ones. The Wii userbase is not informed, does not buy magazines or surf the web. If a game is good, they usually buy it, but if they don't know it exists they won't.
Actually this game will sell decently, 500k is very possible, but with a better marketing it could open over 100k.

Things like in-game achievements, deathmatch mode (a la NMH2) could all boost replayability a lot. I would just wait for a price drop before buying a game without that much replayability.
