I just started playing NMH2 today.

The reviewers say this game is more accessible to the masses but I don't see it. They got rid of the overworld, which is a bonus because the overworld was a waste of time to begin with. And you don't have to grind money for ranked battles anymore. But you still need to grind money for beam katanas and training. And seeing how the training is a lot harder in NMH2 than NMH1, you're gonna have to grind money for training a lot more in this game than you did in NMH1 (where training was cake).

Also while many gamers cite the 8-bit-styled mini-games as an improvement over the side job and training mini-games of NMH1, the mainstream gamer is unlikely to agree. Retro gaming is more of a nerd culture type of thing. The mainstream core gamer doesn't wanna play NES-style minigames for a good chunk of their time. To them, NES gameplay and graphics is lame. Mainstream core gamers also aren't going to like all that 8-bit era-esque pattern memorization they need for the higher levels in the muscle training mini-game. What were the reviewers smoking when they said that NMH2 was more accessible/mainstream friendly? It isn't.

In the end people can't just point at NMH2's sales and say that it's the Wii's fault. No. NMH2 is a core game but NMH2 only appeals to a niche of core gamers. Suda51 pigeonholed this game into a niche by going the whole NES mini-game route and making those mini-games a huge part of this game (if you want money to buy new beam katanas and upgrade your stats, you have to play them). Suda51's game design choices are to blame for this game's poor sales. Not the Wii.

For the record, I'd say I personally prefer NMH1. Though I'm only like 20% of the way through in NMH2.

Damn you're right, I had not realized that. Once you look at a side by side comparison of american charts only it looks a lot bleaker. Oh well, it really was an unnecessary sequel, Suda should have gone for a new ip.
Message | Report
loves2splooge posted 29/04/2010, 07:16
@Armads

The reason why NMH2 outsold NMH1 for the first two months in that chart has to do with the fact that NMH1 was Japanese-exclusive for two months and Japanese sales for NMH were quite small compared to North American sales. NMH2 on the other hand is 4 months North American exclusive and North America makes up the bulk of the sales for NMH. More than half of NMH1's sales came from North America.

If you look at North American NMH1's sales compared to North American NMH2's sales, NMH2 ,in it's first three months sold a lot less than NMH1 in it's first three months.

Everyone lamenting on horrible sales for this game should take a look at this http://www.vgchartz.com/swlaunch.php?reg1=All&game1=No+More+Heroes+2+-+Wii[27610]®2=All&game2=No+More+Heroes+-+Wii[7667]®3=All&game3=&weeks=100

NMH2 is not doing all that much worse than the first one did at launch. In fact it started off better and only in the past few weeks dipped below it in sales. It is likely due to the quirky nature of the title and once it gets some recognition (I.e. once more people see the game and know about it) sales will probably pick up to a steady pace to deliver it to around NMH1s sales over a long period of time.

I bought this game launch week, and it blew. I bought the original launch week, and have played over 70 hours into replaying it. If you want a smart, fun action game, buy the original. Just avoid the sequel. Suda was bumped to a producer, his role was MUCH less involved than the original, and it shows.

Stick a fork in Marvelous Entertainment (owners of the NMH IP). They and NIS are going to go join Cing in bankruptcy. Marvelous has had to eat losses from game after game after game. No More Heroes 2 sales are down quite a bit from NMH1, Deadly Premonition sold only 30k-ish in NA (at $20 each!) and a couple thousand in Japan (at full price). Heroes Paradise is going to be an epic fail financially. Contrary to Marvelous' believe that the HD market is the way to go, that game is going to fail hard in Japan and while I think it would be more popular in the west if they bothered to localize the HD port, its sales would largely dissapoint (if NMH2, a true sequel, is doing this badly. Imagine what it would be like for a 2-3 year port). They are going to take the dirt nap eventually.

This game is a major disappointment. Its obvious that NMH2 took a backseat in Suda's overall plans. The charm and wick from the original are no where to be seen. And as much as id like to attribute the (lackluster) sales to this, the astounding lack of any respectable marketing campaign from Ubisoft in spite of the originals success and the low levels of pre-launch hype have made NMH2 slow out of the gate.

MatrosRx posted 12/03/2010, 10:37
I think another factor might be the mistake of announcing the HD version of NMH (which apparently Suda didn't know about) a few months before the release of NMH2. So a lot of Hardcore and core gamers would be expecting this to go HD too and won't bother with the Wii version.
