Not the kind of holiday boost I was hoping it would get. Donkey Kong Country, as Nintendo's big holiday release last year, showed much bigger growth through the holidays. This did, however, stay steady. With just one more week in the USA where it will likely crack 100k, I don't suspect this Zelda too much. It's at where I predicted it would be (~1.3-1.6 million by the end of the calendar year) and probably won't have too much gas in the tank. Sold like a typical Zelda in the USA (e.g. Wind Waker) and might top out at 2.25-2.5 million USA. Europe numbers throughout the holiday were strong, probably push 1.2-1.3 million there when it is all said and done. And Japan... WOW. Still can't get over it. 500k is probably out of reach.

For the record, when I said "this game will sell 4-5 million", I meant to add a "probably" in there. Anyway, @bmp: Although it doesn't make the sales any better, it's selling pretty close to the way TP did in japan. It probably won't reach 600,000 over there in the long run..it took TP an extremely long time to get there.

Yes Roar_Of_War, you're right about everything and there won't be a massive drop-off in sales after the new year. I have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about. You know the secrets to video game sales and anybody who has different views than you couldn't possibly be right, because you've accurately predicted the sales of every video game.

Roar_Of_War posted 23/12/2011, 10:44
@VGking Sales are a bit low for a big game, yet Zelda has never been a big seller? Isn't that contradicting? How can it be "as big as this" if Zelda has also never been a "huge seller"? Regardless, how much did you expect it to sell at this point? It's Wii exclusive and needs more time to build up. Even so, console Zelda games typically sell 4-7 million depending on the game. That's not absolutely huge, but its still a beast. People's standards are changing with multiplatform games and Call of Duty =/

This game will sell anywhere from 4-5 million, I'm not denying that. I'm just saying that until we see that drop, let's not use it as data to support our arguments. Trends can often change. As Soma said, the Wii isn't even a dying system yet. He has a point: What if the Wii U doesn't sell well? What if the Wii still sells powerfully until 2013? We need to let things play out and -then- do the talking.

@NolSinkler: Where is this massive drop off for Skyward Sword? Come back to tell me this when you can factually prove it. Secondly, TP was the only popular game at the Wii's release for a long time. This HELPS sales, it does not weaken it. Look at Red Steel 2: Cool looking game compared to everything else aside from Zelda? and it sold well at launch, inspite of being a mediocre game. The game that stands out at launch will benefit from sales because thats all people have to choose from.

@Roma, it's a dying system because Wii U, not because its current sales level. Wii will drop much more around the Wii U's release.

NolSinkler posted 22/12/2011, 06:35
Right. When Zelda launched with the Wii, there were limits to its sales. As more Wiis sold, though, TP sales did not have a massive drop-off. Skyward Sword will have a massive drop-off in sales. Its day-one sales look better, because almost everybody who WOULD play Zelda now already owns a Wii and therefore would buy SS very quickly.

Zelda only sells to its own fanbase, and that's why it barely makes a difference from system to system.

Are you kidding me? Launch titles sell better, not worse. Installbase means -nothing- when it comes to Zelda. Gamecube did horrible, TWW still sold well. Wii did incredibly, but TP only managed to do the typical Zelda standard. It -is- doing better than TP..for now. I just don't expect it to last because of requiring an add-on/wiimote plus to play, and being on a dying system.

I'm happy to see Ocarina reaching a new generation, 249k in its 26th week, and I understand that the 3DS is the hot item this holdiay, but I would have thought that Skyward Sword would have had the better of the holiday season.

In fairness, TP went on to become the highest selling Zelda ever both in the USA and WW (Wii+GCN). Sales are a BIT disappointing, but overall, I don't think you could have expected too much more out of a dying system. I was hoping for 200k+ in the USA this week, but 169k will do. Doesn't have the legs Donkey Kong Country Returns had last year (the Wii's major holiday release in 2010) but it is doing decent. Holding up really well in Europe too. Japan is still a head shaker. Can't believe that one.

It probably feels disappointing because of Skyrim. The fact of the matter is, this game is selling faster than the previous Zelda, but Skyrim is selling just -that- good, so it makes Zelda seem weaker right now. People are also expecting this to die out faster than TP due to it being on a dying console, but we'll see I guess.

I think it was a really dumb move to make the version with controller included a "Limited editon". It's hard to find now, and expensive. Thus the incentive for an impulse buy is greatly reduced for most people... no nice big all-you-need box on the shelve. Instead they'll see "M+ add on required", hm ho, what is it, another 20€$, naaaahh... not ideal.

Roar_Of_War I would bet you a fortune that Skyward Sword doesn't outsell Twilight Princess. You're looking at the short term present statistics, not how games trend (especially games at the end of a console life cycle). Twilight Princess had the benefit of being on a system for 5 years now, through all of its peak years, and being a Greatest Hits game to fuel sales. It topped at 2.98 million on the Wii and just over 1 million on the GCN. Skyward Sword faces limited time in the lime light with the Wii U coming out and the Wii losing steam after the holiday season (which it statistically does after each year). I'm not basing it on opinion, I'm basing it on "trends." Majora's Mask had the same issue - launched at the end of the console life cycle with a technological add on alienating potential video game users. Majora's Mask opened up strong, sold well through the holidays, and quickly faded as the PS2, GCN and XBX all flooded the market. You think this will be very different because of three weeks of sales? I'm not even saying that Skyward Sword is a failure, but check other people's views too. Not many people think this will outsell TP (which is the highest selling Zelda in the USA with Wii and GCN combined sales).

Roar_Of_War posted 14/12/2011, 01:32
If we're talking about pacing, then SS is still winning. Knocturnal, you keep basing your talk off a prediction, not a present reality. 3 weeks in a row is proving that Skyward Sword is holding up better than TP, so far.
Message | Report
knocturnal2435 posted 14/12/2011, 01:04
It's all about pacing NintendoPie. Skyward Sword won't have the same kind of legs for a handful of reasons (release late in console life cycle being one of them). A faster start and a shorter run does not lead to more sales. It will be interesting to see how it will sell in comparison to titles before Twilight Princess. Plus, if you factor in TP Wii Sales + GCN Sales, it's possible that Skyward Sword isn't outselling Twilight Princess by that much in its first 3 weeks.

NintendoPie posted 13/12/2011, 10:12

JTurner82 posted 13/12/2011, 09:39
Well the holiday season has only just begun. There's still time for the Japanese sales to pick up. It doesn't have to outsell TP worldwide to still be a success. Nonetheless, I DO expect that the next game WILL have realistic graphics and, hopefully, do better numbers even in Japan. The problem with the Wii was that its userbase was very unbalanced. WiiU SHOULD attract more gamers, and as such, the sales could very well be stronger in Japan and Europe, too.

USA numbers are steady! That's the one bright spot to it. 604k, 149k, and 198k are fantastic numbers through three weeks. With another 3 weeks of holiday sales, there is no doubt in my mind it pushes another 750k+ to finish the year just north of 1.6 million in the USA (a pretty solid number).

Can't believe the drop it took in Japan. With the holiday season I expected better legs. Just 33k? Wow. It's not doing fantastic in Europe either (but at least it is showing steady legs). I wonder what their marketing campaign was like outside of the United States. People forget, between 2000-2005 the Zelda franchise had no problem pushing over 300k in Japan in its first week and between 600-700k each time (with titles like Ocarina of Time crushing the 1 million mark). I wonder what happened to diminish it's appeal in Japan.

The overall Europe total isn't terrible, though; it's currently at 389k in that territory, while Japan's is at 247k. So yeah, it's not as huge as USA, but it's not flopping; the LTDs in both territories will still be at least over the 300k mark.

"In the case of Skyward Sword it's tracking pretty similar to what Twilight Princess did when it was released, so Skyward Sword could at least be able to hit the 500k mark. Of course I wonder if because of Motion+ controls the game be too complicated for the Japanese audience which could hurt it's word of mouth." — LuigiDude. So it should still at least keep on going to approximately 300k, although I'm not sure how much further it will go. Still, it's not like the series will be TOTALLY dead in Japan; at least for the WiiU version they have an opportunity to make the controls less difficult and more simple. That and don't launch it in the beginning or near the end of the console's cycle.

I'm not saying it's not, it's true that Twilight Princess did too, but it's worth mentioning. I'm hoping this pushes 150-200k a week through the holidays. It will undoubtably jump infront of WW's pace and well ahead of TP's pace. All in all, It will probably push 1.5-2 million in the United States by the end of the holidays, which isn't too bad. I'm more interested to see if it can bounce back in Japan.

Even hand held installments, like Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks pushed over 300k in Japan. I know Twilight Princess moved just 146k in Japan opening week, but I figured that was because it was a launch title (plus, if you add the GCN numbers to it, it probably surpasses what Skyward Sword did). Not a good sign. Japan is one of the biggest markets for Zelda.

Okay, it was through April 5th - Which means the Wind Waker moved 826,000 over a 12 day period (final 7 days of March and first 5 days of April) - That still being said - It still had 560,000 in pre-orders. A figure still greater than the Skyward Sword first week, and will have to push at least 300k in its second week to meet the Wind Wakers first two weeks. That being said, I still find plenty of discrepancy in Nintendo's report for it being the "fastest" selling Zelda ever. Ocarina of Time did 2.5 million in the USA in its first 39 days, that is a figure I doubt Skyward Sword will achieve (and if you need a link for that, I can get you one =) ). Ok, so sorry for getting nasty, but still... Look at the facts, and their clam looks questionable.

Check your facts first. That is a readily available NPD report stating that Wind Waker sold 826,000 copes in its seven day period for the month of March. Are are you going to say the previous NPD reports for GCN software have been falsified? I'd like Nintendo to explain how this could be the "best selling Zelda of all time" when Wind Waker had over 560,000 pre-orders (http://www.gamespot.com/gamecube/adventure/the-legend-of-zelda-the-wind-waker/news/2912648/the-wind-waker-sets-preorder-records) - more than the entire first week total of Skyward Sword... Again CHECK YOUR FACTS.

TERRIBLE numbers. According to NPD, Wind Waker sold 826,000 in March 2003 (with only one week of sales) in the USA. Back in 2000, Majora's Mask launched alongside the PS2, at the end of October, and pushed 550,000. Twilight Princess was a launch title and sold over 400k+. Now, we have Skyward Sword, the long awaited title in the Zelda franchise, and it pushes 535k the week of Black Friday with 40 million Wii's on the market? Pitiful. It's a failure in my opinion. And this is coming from a die hard Zelda fan. Huge commercial failure. It will suffer from what Majora's Mask suffered from --> poor release date and a required add on alienating users. Nintendo dropped the ball marketing this one.

It has a slow start, but this game is bringing back that warm feeling I had in my heart when playing the 8 & 16 bit Zelda games. This is one of the top five Zelda games I have played so far, I've only played about 5hours. The sword play is becoming fun as I am learning how to use it (And I wished TP didn't have waggle)

Um...why the heck is this adjusted down? When I joined VGChartz last december this was at like 4.4 million.

Isn't this adjusted?

It's adjusted, it was over 4m for sure. Adjusted down which is hilareous, because it is most definitely undertracked. VGC already took over a year to match Nintendo's published numbers back in 2012 so this is not exactly credible.

You know a franchise has some serious power when you do almost no promotion and your E3 presentations for it are bad and the game launches on a dying platform but the thing STILL sells 4mil, STILL gets nominated for numerous awards, and STILL wins multiple large publications GOTY awards. In the same year Skyrim and Arkham City launched.

I love ths game. Nintendo needs to fix the timing of their Zelda release cycle. You can't release a game of this class and scope right before a console is phased out, when public interest for the system has died down.
