Trust. Fear. Death.
These are the three major components of the survival-horror game The Thing. A third-person action game, The Thing mixes action and puzzle elements, tasking the player to discover just what went on in an Arctic research station.
Based on the hit 1982 film of the same name, The Thing puts you into the boots of a special forces team-member, sent to investigate the situation with a team of technical experts and medics. When they arrive on the scene, it's apparent that something has gone on, judging by the mutilated corpses and pools of blood. Eventually it transpires a shape-shifting alien is on the loose, capable of imitating anything it wants.
This leads to the key aspect of the game, the trust system. Your team-mates will treat you well if you show leadership skills or give them a weapon, but do something to annoy them (like shooting them) and you will lose their trust. Performing a blood test on yourself will also boost the trust they have in you, and you can ask them to perform the same test, which can lead to some horrifying results...
Puzzle elements (such as locked doors and blown transistors) require you to keep your team-members with you at all times, as they have the talents that will help you through the game.
Using sophisticated weaponry (flamethrowers, machine guns) you have to battle a smart enemy, and the poorly lit research areas are offset by the seemingly endless snowy plains outside.
The Thing builds on the survival-horror template set by the Resident Evil series, providing a constant stream of shocks and action.
