Technically, Chrono Trigger was a 'sleeper' hit in America, as RPGs and Square games were still a medium sell in America at the time. Only Final Fantasy was a big name seller at the time.

But in Japan, it was the equivalent of bringing together the 'gods' of the Japanese RPG world to one game. And its surprising it didn't sell more. And that Chrono Cross didn't have the same team. And that we don't have a Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy cross over RPG by now. Although with the quality, sales and downright market saturation that is showing the clear difference between each side of the company, I suppose I can see why Yuji Horii wouldn't ever want to get himself involved with the 'Square' side again.

CT was not a cult hit. It's the best selling JRPG ever outside of the three big Square franchises.

Chrono Trigger is a cult hit, you have to remember. It was insanely hard to find for the SNES in America (under 300,000 copies sold), and not exactly easy to find in Japan either (only about 2mil copies sold there). A lot of people have only heard of or experienced CT second-hand or via emulators, and far more are totally unaware of the game.
